In 1995 he was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Computer Applications from the University of Notre Dame. From 2000 to 2003 he taught as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science with The George Washington University Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Unit, Washington, DC. He served with the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Surface Warfare Officer Distribution Branch, PERS-41 in Millington, TN from 2006 to 2009 initially as a Division Officer Sea Duty Coordinator and later as a Metrics Analyst and Assistant Community Manager. He served a second sea tour from 2003 to 2006 first as Operations Officer in USS Winston S. Weeldreyer completed his initial sea tour from 1996 to 2000 as Damage Control Assistant and Training Officer in USS De Wert (FFG 45) followed by an assignment as Fire Control Officer in USS Monterey (CG 61). While deployed, Halsey participated in multiple Maritime Security Operations in the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, South China Sea, and Western Pacific Ocean, specifically supporting the Oceania Maritime Security Initiative, serving as CTF 151’s Flag Ship for Counter Piracy Operations, and representing the United States during numerous theater security engagements. He completed two deployments supporting Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn while assigned to the Abraham Lincoln and Carl Vinson Strike Groups in the Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean. Weeldreyer served as Commanding Officer in USS Russell (DDG 59) and as Commanding and Executive Officer in USS Halsey (DDG 97) from 2010 to 2013. Prior to attending NDU, CAPT Weeldreyer served in the Pentagon as an Operations Research Analyst in the Secretary of Defense’s Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation (CAPE) Directorate providing independent analytic advice to the Secretary regarding weapon systems, force structure, and cost-effectiveness of U.S. A recent graduate from the National Defense University’s (NDU) Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, Captain Mike Weeldreyer will report to Leyte Gulf in January 2022.
